What camera did you use? Why? We shot on the Black Magic Ursa Mini. Spencer wanted it to look more cinematic and have the slow-mo option.
What lights did you use? Why? I checked out both the Lowell Kit lights and the Arri 650 medium Kit (2 lights). I wanted the 650’s as my key lights and the Lowell lights as my fill and background lights. I learned real fast that this was way more work than I anticipated and only used the Arri lights. About a quarter of the way through Spencer or his Dad broke the Arri and then the store where we were pulling power from closed so I didn’t use a lot of the equipment.
What did you learn technically? Technically I learned how to use the focus peaking on the Ursa mini. I also learned how to use the new firmware update which was nice because it is a totally different menu system than the old firmware.
What did you do well and what things can you improve on? I think I held focus pretty well throughout the film. So that went well. I think I need to work on getting AC’s for shoots like this. That would have been a huge help. I also think I should always go to shoots with my camera already built. That’s something that I’ve chosen to work on.
What was it like to watch this with an audience? Was your work in focus? Did the director use your favorite takes? Why or why not? I was nervous to watch this with an audience because of how set was. It turned out better than I thought though. I think everything was in focus – most of the problems were lights, which was frustrating for many reasons.
