This photo emphasizes vertical lines a lot, which I think only strengthens as the stairs go higher. I took this shot because 1: I was mesmerized by this particular angle of the building, and 2: I see strong metaphorical resemblance in this which reminds me of religious convictions as well as a pursuit for knowledge. I wish I could have blocked the sun, with my hand, so that the lens flare wouldn't be so apparent.

I noticed these square designs along the concrete walls on the south side of BYU campus. The walls are also angular, not curved. These were probably constructed during a time when straight-edged architecture was the only conceivable option, but I find it very interesting that these extra square symbols are also embedded in them. Squares at first can symbolize structure and stubbornness, but I think can also show standards, steadfastness, and monumental (literally) significance. I also like how I captured the corner of the building behind it, but now I wish I caught more of it.
Friday
You may feel disgust at how my apartment doesn't keep the cleanest table, but I found this curious dry white cup mark being found on our round kitchen table a nice companionship. Both are the same shape, but radically different sizes. I see this as a symbol (and forgive me if this sounds like a stretch) of a parent-to-child relationship, especially one where the child is very young, vulnerable, and naive. The parent must be protective, and nourish the child. Of course, this instance of the table is a solid, inorganic symbol, and the mark can be cleaned off in the future, but the sight of the shapes is the speaker here.

Your first photo captured the HFAC from a really good angle. I love the effect of both the vertical and diagonal lines in it. They play together to create something very moving but very strong.
ReplyDeleteYour second photo is interesting. I think the symmetry also adds to the feeling of sturdiness that you talked about. This seems like it would be a location that could be used in a scene in which someone felt trapped and unable to feel emotion because of the line and shape.
I think the form of the circle in the middle of the table in your third photo is interesting. It's not quite a complete circle, and its quality moves through various points on the strong/weak spectrum. The mirroring shape of the mark with the edge of the table, as you noted, is interesting as well.
