This is my Master & Coverage scene, from the film "Fargo."

  1. I shot Spencer’s Master with Coverage with a Panasonic Gh4. I used this camera because the Ursa Mini was taken and I know the camera, so I could focus more on setting up shots. We didn’t use any lights for this because the room was lit so nicely from natural window lights. The scene looked bright enough with the master and even with the shots on the main woman, but I wish we had maybe a small light to brighten the man since he was backlit from the windows behind him. I learned that it is hard to focus on a project when you have something else in the back of your head. I was kind of rushing to get done because I had to leave directly after to drive to Colorado for Thanksgiving. Since I was stressed about that, my mind struggled to focus on the scene I was shooting. However, life is always going to be stressful and it was good practice of veering my focus where it needed to be.

I thought I did well at framing for the most part. I loved the master shot because of the balanced-ness and the quote on the wall that I purposefully left in there. The medium close ups looked pretty good to me, except for a small focus issue on the girl at points. I didn’t love the first shot due to the lack of focused-ness until she steps into frame, but I do believe we shot another take where I pulled focus… I wish we had more time to shoot more takes because I think the film, particularly the first shot, would have benefitted from this. We spent a lot of time trying to match the over the shoulder shots and for the most part it looked decent, especially compared to the trial take we did before we adjusted the camera placement.

I didn’t notice the headroom on the guy when we were over her shoulder, so it was nice to have the class point that out. I think I was caught up on matching their sizes more than headroom. For the most part I think Spencer used most of my best takes. It was a fun location to shoot at, even though the shoot was challenging.
